Freedom & Aries

A summary from my book, Astrology Education 2:

Celestial bodies falling into the sign of Aries carry multiple meanings. One of these is “freedom.” Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy magazine, was arrested, and his writings and magazine were banned; yet, he broke through this resistance and published Playboy anyway. His Mercury, related to communication, and his Sun, representing masculine identity, were both in Aries. Interestingly (!), the first cover of Playboy magazine featured Marilyn Monroe—the ultimate symbol of sexuality—whose Venus was also in Aries. After Hefner passed away, he was buried right next to her.

Another one of my favorite examples is Simón Bolívar. With his Mars in Aries, he is a freedom fighter of a completely different domain. As the man who liberated South America through his legendary war of independence, Bolívar lent his name to two different countries. And what about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk? The Great Leader’s Jupiter and Saturn, planets that influence societies, were in the sign of Aries.

Someone with Mercury in Aries can represent an intellectually free individual or someone in pursuit of freedom. However, even the astrologers who lived thousands of years ago knew that astrological positions should not be interpreted so simplistically, and that planets act as “companions” rather than direct “influences.” That Mercury could signify a completely different trait in a chart, adding entirely different colors through its aspects. (For instance: a Mercury-Saturn square might indicate someone who believes rules do not apply to them, while a trine to Jupiter could reveal someone who oversteps boundaries and restricts the freedom of others).

While pursuing freedom, celestial bodies in Aries also utilize other Aries-driven actions, such as pushing boundaries or dismantling resistance.

We observe the nature of Aries radically in progressed charts. For example, when Secondary Progressed (SP) Moon is in Aries, we see individuals becoming more liberated and their likelihood of breaking free from certain constraints increasing. Of course, this part is not simple either. If the Moon squares Saturn, we might see them getting rid of a major responsibility that has been draining their time.

Naturally, in addition to all of this, one must not forget the precise point that separates astrology from fortune-telling: if a person is unaware of this need for freedom, they might rush from relationship to relationship (Venus in Aries), jump from one thought to another without deepening their understanding (Mercury in Aries), or take on an excessive savior complex for their family (Moon in Aries), and so on.
