The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand that Triggered World War I
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand, which took place in Sarajevo on the morning of June 28, 1914, was ostensibly an act of local ethnic nationalism (with the ASC ruler Mercury in Cancer and in the 11th house), yet it became the ultimate spark that ignited the powder keg of Europe. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie were visiting Sarajevo to observe military maneuvers and to defuse the tense anti-Austrian sentiment in the region. However, this trip turned into a deadly trap planned months in advance by the “Black Hand,” a secret Serbian nationalist organization.
What happened that day was a chain of entirely tragic coincidences. During the convoy’s arrival in the city, one of the first assassins threw a bomb at the vehicle, but the bomb bounced off the car and blew up the escort vehicle behind it (Jupiter, the ruler of the 7th house symbolizing the attackers, was in the 6th house -the bomb- and in retrograde motion). The Prince and his wife escaped this first attack unharmened. According to the plan, the trip should have been canceled; however, Franz Ferdinand wished to visit the wounded officers in the hospital (Mercury in mutual reception with the Moon in the 12th house).
It was precisely this sudden change of decision and the driver taking the wrong route into the wrong street (12th house Moon and Mercury in Cancer: Route and location errors) that fundamentally altered history. As the driver realized his mistake and tried to shift into reverse, the engine stalled. At that exact moment, the assassin Gavrilo Princip, waiting on that very street in disappointment, saw his target standing right in front of him. Princip drew his pistol and fired two shots from a very close range. One bullet hit the Archduke in the neck, and the other struck his wife Sophie in the abdomen. Both lost their lives within minutes, before they could be rushed to the hospital.
Mercury not only symbolizes cars and streets, but since Mars also rules the 3rd house, it is similarly related to vehicles and streets.
This event led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia; subsequently, the chain of alliances was activated, and within just a few weeks, all major powers found themselves embroiled in World War I. A simple wrong turn triggered a global catastrophe that would cost 20 million lives (Mercury, the significator of the event, was in parallel aspect with Venus, the representative of war and political power, which also rules the 9th house).
